Christmas 2008

Alana was hoping for a white Christmas this year, but to no avail. It sure seemed cold enough to snow, but all we got was some heavy rain. The snow was saved for Figueroa Mountain, about 20 minutes away from us. Oh well, maybe next time.

This year Tyler was little more specific with his Christmas list to Santa. He went through the Toys R Us “Big Book” and cut and pasted the pictures onto some construction paper, There was definitely a theme of cars, trains and track sets to his list. He was so excited about the prospect of getting new toys that we had the list done the weekend after Halloween and we had to listen to him tell us over and over again for a month and a half what he had put on his list (as well as any toys he had forgotten and wanted to add to his list).

Tyler had his first sleepover away from Mama and Daddy this holiday season. While we attended Bill’s company party down at the Biltmore in Montecito Tyler got to spend some time at his buddy Harrison’s house. They went on a car ride to look at Christmas lights and watched “The Polar Express” while nibbling on popcorn and sipping hot chocolate. Then Tyler curled up on an air mattress in Harrison’s room and went to sleep. We were all so proud that he went through the night without any indication that he was homesick or sad because Mama or Daddy weren’t there to put him to sleep.

When Christmas morning finally rolled around Tyler was so intent on checking the milk and cookies to see if Santa had come that he ran right by the tree and didn’t even give it, or the presents underneath, a second glance. It wasn’t until we mentioned the tree and what was under it that we got the surprised grin and giggle that we were hoping for. Needless to say Tyler made out, getting some of the things he asked for, as well as a few surprises that he didn’t ask for. Now we’re going to have to go through his old toys and teach him about donating to those who are less fortunate. It’s amazing how much one 4-year-old child can accumulate in such a short amount of time.
